Healthy Aging: Better With Age

Here’s a fun idea for your next milestone birthday or anniversary celebration. How about serving up some food and fun inspired by the many things that get better with the passage of time? It’s a fun reminder of the benefits of aging (the alternative being no better, for sure) that we should keep in mind as we rejoice in — rather than lament — the privilege of aging.

Plan a wine and cheese pairing with delicious aged Gruyere and Roquefort selections served with a vintage reserve Chardonnay or Cabernet — or a mature bottle of Champagne. Enjoy an appetizer of fruits and vegetables dressed with a sweet drizzle of delicious, aged Aceto Balsamic di ModenaServe your guests on antique china, silver and cut crystal on crisp vintage linens.

For entertainment, what could be better than cueing up a fun playlist of classics from bygone eras? Dance the night away  to swing, cool jazz and some old standards  — many argue much better music then what’s being produced currently. Dress in your best vintage couture and invite guests to do the same and take some black and white phots of the celebration for some old-timey fun.

Research from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that when it comes to advancing age and happiness — there’s good reason to be optimistic. They found in their poll of over 350,000 men and women that at age 18 folks tend to feel pretty good, but that happiness starts getting derailed as they’re predictably hit by more of life’s challenges. Things tend to bottom out around age 50, but then make a dramatic course correction as people tend to get happier and happier in their older years. In fact, by age 85, most folks tend to be just about as satisfied with themselves than they were at 18.

Now that’s something to really celebrate!
