Happiness Handbook: Right as Rain

Are dark clouds threatening your weekend plans? No problem — get your hygge on and cozy up with these five tips to boost your happiness for the next rainy day that comes your way:

1. Take an afternoon nap on the sofa, dozing off to the gentle, soothing sound of rain falling on the roof.

2. Watch your favorite old movie (Singing in the Rain?) with a bowl of popcorn, preferably cuddled under a blanket with someone special.

3. Take out that shoebox full of old photos and spend the day reminiscing — scan a few and share the memories with friends and family.

4. Put on a pair of galoshes and go puddle-stomping through the neighborhood, just like when you were a kid. Afterward sip a cup of hot chocolate to warm up (with marshmallows, of course).

5. Go through that stack of magazines you’ve been meaning to get to, sitting by the window watching the rain fall, drinking a glass of chardonnay and waiting for the rainbow.

And if you think the rain is probably going to make you sad, a study out of the UK (where it rains a lot) says think again. A study that followed the lives 10,000 households and compared measures of happiness to climatological records found weather “had very little effect on individual measures of well-being.” So unless you’re one of the few sufferers out there of SAD (Sunlight Affective Disorder), you can expect a rainy day to be just about as good as a sunny one.
